• The Kansas City Royals featured the second-worst offense in the American League a year ago and arrived in Detroit having pushed across only five runs in their first three games. The Royals broke out of their funk with a barrage of home runs in the series opener and look to keep the bats going in the second of a four-game set against the Tigers on Tuesday night. Offseason addition Maikel Franco sparked a comeback from an early four-run deficit Monday with a pair of homers and four RBIs for Kansas City, which tied a franchise record by going deep six times. Whit Merrifield batted .349 with four homers last year at Comerica Park and continued to make himself at home by going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.

• The Tigers were bidding for their first three-game winning streak since May 2019, but they were unable to protect a 5-1 lead by giving up 11 unanswered runs. The bottom of the order was a positive for Detroit as No. 9 hitter JaCoby Jones belted a three-run homer and Victor Reyes added a solo shot and a pair of RBIs.

• Kansas City had to use five relievers Monday after Mike Montgomery lasted only two innings, so it will likely be looking at a bullpen game Tuesday. Manager Mike Matheny told reporters after Monday’s game that he planned to talk to his pitchers first before announcing a starter. Tyler Zuber could open after pitching two hitless innings in his major league debut Friday. Zimmer pitched in 1 game so far this – pitching 1 inning and striking out all batters faced.

• Royals 1B Ryan O’Hearn delivered a tiebreaking two-run single hours after he was activated off the injured list Monday.

• Tigers 1B C.J. Cron finally cooled off, striking out in all four at-bats Monday.

• Royals LHP Foster Griffin had a bittersweet 25th birthday, earning the win before leaving Monday’s game with a left forearm strain.
