• The Detroit Tigers have scored the fewest runs in the major leagues but amazingly are three games above .500. The Tigers will try to get their bats moving on Saturday afternoon, when they visit the Minnesota Twins for the opener of a series that was reduced from three game to two due to Friday’s postponement because of snow. Detroit (8-5) has scored fewer than three runs seven times en route to a total of 33 in 13 games and also owns the lowest batting average in the majors (.191). “We still haven’t had one of those days where we’re knocking it all over the field,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters after Thursday’s 4-0 loss to Cleveland. “Hopefully, we’ll eventually break out as an offense and be consistent. That’s what we’re looking for. Right now, it’s not there, but we’re playing pretty good baseball.”

• Minnesota is fresh off a two-game road split against the New York Mets in which it scored 20 runs while facing elite starters Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. The Twins smashed six homers in the contest started by deGrom and have 14 on the season, with Max Kepler and Mitch Garver leading the way with three apiece.

• Ross defeated Kansas City in his last turn as he allowed one run and five hits over seven innings. The native of California, who turns 32 on April 22, struck out eight batters and walked just one in the strong outing and has limited hitters to a .209 average through two starts. Ross is 0-3 with a 4.97 ERA in five career appearances (three starts) against the Twins.

• Pineda defeated Philadelphia last time out as he gave up two runs and four hits over five innings. The victory was the first for the 30-year-old Dominican since June 30, 2017, when he was a member of the New York Yankees. Pineda is 1-2 with a 3.91 ERA in four career starts against Detroit and has struggled to retire Miguel Cabrera (6-for-10).

• The Twins won 12 of last season’s 19 meetings with the Tigers.

• Minnesota 2B Jonathan Schoop went 5-for-9 with a double and two homers in the two-game series against the Mets.

• Detroit ranks last in the majors with five home runs, with OF Christin Stewart hitting two of them.
