• Losing two of three at home to the worst team in baseball a year ago was not how the New York Yankees envisioned their season would start. The Yankees will try to rebound from back-to-back losses to the Baltimore Orioles when they open a three-game series with the visiting Detroit Tigers on Monday. After recording a pair of homers among nine hits to go along with eight walks in a season-opening 7-2 win over the Orioles, New York left 25 runners on base in consecutive setbacks, stranding a pair to end Sunday’s 7-5 loss following a lengthy rain delay.

• The Tigers gained a split of a four-game set in Toronto with Sunday’s 4-3 win in 11 innings. They went 24 innings without a run before scoring three in the seventh and then picking up the decisive tally on Nicholas Castellanos’ RBI single in the 11th.

• Ross has struggled to regain the form that made him an All-Star with San Diego in 2014, but he finished strong in 2018 with nine games (one start) and a 2.73 ERA with St. Louis following a midseason acquisition. He has pitched just one time in relief at Yankee Stadium but is 0-3 with a 6.88 ERA in six career encounters. The 31-year-old posted a 5.14 ERA in six starts during spring training.

• German has an opportunity to start with Luis Severino on the injured list and CC Sabathia serving an early-season suspension while also recovering from various injuries. The 26-year-old German struck out 102 batters in 85 2/3 innings last season for New York, going 2-5 with a 6.19 ERA in 14 starts. He lost his only prior start against the Tigers with 6 2/3 innings of four-run ball.

• Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera went 0-for-6 on Sunday and is 2-for-15 on the season.

• Yankees 2B DJ LeMahieu is 4-for-6 with two walks through his first two games.

• Detroit has won seven of its last 11 games in Yankee Stadium.
