Lopez showed promise in his first full season in the majors in 2018, ranking second on the team in innings pitched (188 2/3) while holding opponents to a .234 average. That success did not necessarily translate to his matchups with the Royals, who got to the 25-year-old for 15 earned runs in 23 innings while hammering six homers. Merrifield had one of those blasts and is 7-for-18 in his career against Lopez, who posted a 5.74 ERA in four spring training starts.

Junis made a team-high 30 starts in his second season in the majors while also leading the Royals in innings (177) and strikeouts (164) and wins (tied with Keller). He gave up eight home runs – one-fourth of his season total – in 24 2/3 innings against the White Sox. Third baseman Yoan Moncada has gone deep twice in 11 career at-bats versus the 26-year-old Junis.

The first four hitters in the Royals’ lineup in Thursday’s win combined to go 5-for-13 with all five runs scored, while the next five hitters were 0-for-18.
