• The Toronto Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers traded shutouts in the first two games of their season-opening series. Both clubs will try to find some length and consistency in the lineup when they meet again in Toronto for the third of a four-game series on Saturday. Tigers right-hander Jordan Zimmermann took a perfect game into the seventh inning on Thursday but could not get a win as his team waited until the 10th inning to tack on some runs in a 2-0 victory.

• Detroit was even quieter with the bats on Friday, scattering two hits – both by right fielder Nick Castellanos – across nine innings as the Blue Jays flew to a 6-0 triumph. Blue Jays left fielder Teoscar Hernandez, who broke up Zimmermann’s perfect game with an infield hit on Thursday, drove in a run and scored another on Friday, while right-hander Matt Shoemaker breezed through seven innings in his team debut to earn a win. Toronto right-hander Aaron Sanchez will be looking for similar run support when he goes up against Detroit rookie Spencer Turnbull on Saturday.

• Turnbull is getting a chance in the rotation with Michael Fulmer on the injured list and is getting his second opportunity in the majors after struggling in a call-up last September. The 26-year-old struck out 15 in as many innings in the spring and went 5-8 with a 3.92 ERA in 23 starts across four minor-league levels last season. Turnbull made three of his four appearances last year on the road and will be seeing Toronto for the first time.

• Sanchez is trying to regain the form that saw him make 30 starts and lead the American League with a 3.00 ERA in 2016. The 26-year-old right hander battled injuries in each of the last two seasons but made it through spring training healthy and posted a 1.53 ERA in 17 2/3 innings while striking out 14 in Grapefruit League action. Sanchez put together one of his best efforts of 2018 at Detroit on June 3 when he struck out seven and yielded one run and two hits over six innings to earn a win.

• Detroit 3B Jeimer Candelario went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts on Friday and is 1-for-8 with five strikeouts through two games.

• Toronto set a franchise record for scoreless innings by starters to opener a season with Shoemaker and RHP Marcus Stroman combining for 14.

• Castellanos doubled and tripled on Friday for his first two extra-base hits of the season.
