• After winning three of four against one division leader, the Oakland Athletics got off to a good start versus another as they continue their quest for the postseason. Oakland seeks its seventh victory in nine contests when it hosts the New York Yankees on Wednesday for the middle contest of their three-game series. The Athletics posted a 6-2 triumph over American League East-leading New York on Tuesday as they improved to 4-1 on a nine-game homestand that began against Houston, which sits atop the AL West. Matt Olson and Mark Canha hit back-to-back homers during a three-run first inning for Oakland, which pulled even with Tampa Bay for the second wild-card spot.

• Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge went deep on Tuesday as the Yankees lost for the third time in five games and fell into a tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the majors. Judge’s blast was his first since Aug. 4, ending his 13-game drought.

• Happ produced his best performance in nearly a month last Wednesday, allowing two runs and six hits in five innings of a victory over Baltimore. The 36-year-old native of Illinois managed to keep the ball in the park after serving up a total of five homers in his previous two turns but issued three walks for the second straight outing. Happ owns a 4-1 record and 3.96 ERA in nine starts and two relief appearances against Oakland in his career.

• Fiers’ unbeaten streak reached 18 starts on Thursday as he escaped with a no-decision against Houston after surrendering five runs and six hits – four homers – over six innings. The 34-year-old Floridian served up a total of four long balls over his previous 11 turns and has issued two walks over 18 2/3 frames in his last three outings. Fiers has made six career starts against the Yankees, going 2-1 with a 5.06 ERA and 32 strikeouts in as many innings.

• Canha has gone 9-for-20 with two homers and five RBIs during his five-game hitting streak while Olson has recorded two hits in three straight contests and five of his last six.

• New York reportedly agreed to terms with RHP Trevor Rosenthal, who was designated for assignment by Detroit earlier this month, on a minor-league contract.

• Oakland purchased the contract of LHP A.J. Puk from Triple-A Las Vegas and released RHP Marco Estrada, who went 0-2 with a 6.85 ERA in five starts before landing on the injured list in April with back issues.
