• The first Major League Baseball game played in Europe provided a glimpse into the wacky, drawn-out affairs that often take place between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The Yankees survived the nearly five-hour marathon and hope to leave London with a two-game sweep when the rivals complete the overseas series Sunday. Both teams scored six times in the first inning and used eight pitchers overall in New York’s 17-13 triumph Saturday night in London in a game that lasted four hours, 42 minutes – three minutes shy of the longest nine-inning contest in MLB history, which was set in 2006 by these same two teams.
• All-Star DJ LeMahieu had four of the Yankees’ 19 hits and drove in five runs while rookie Michael Chavis provided much of the offense for Boston with a pair of three-run homers. The teams will hope for some length out of their starters in Sunday’s finale but New York will be forced to go with an opener in the form of Stephen Tarpley. The Red Sox, who fell 10 games behind the first-place Yankees on Saturday, counter with fellow left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez.
• Chad Green was expected to be the opener for this one but he was forced to toss two innings of relief after Masahiro Tanaka was chased in the first, prompting the shift to Tarpley, who has made 10 relief appearances for the Yankees. The team optioned lefty Nestor Cortes Jr. following the game after he threw three frames and they will add Chance Adams to the roster Sunday to eat up some innings in relief. The 24-year-old Adams is 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA in three games with New York this year and made his only career start in the majors last year against the Red Sox, allowing three runs in five innings of a loss at Fenway Park.
• Rodriguez gave up five runs in 6 1/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox on Monday while striking out four, his second-lowest total of the season. He has allowed eight home runs in five June starts after serving up just three over his previous seven outings. The 26-year-old has yet to face the Yankees this year but owns a 3.89 ERA in 14 career matchups (12 starts).
• Yankees 1B Luke Voit left Saturday’s game with an abdominal issue and is not expected to be in the lineup Sunday.
• Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts departed the 17-13 loss with a left calf strain.
• Boston CF Jackie Bradley Jr. had four hits Saturday and is batting .306 in June after hitting .247 in May and .127 in April.
