The Vancouver Canucks were unable to generate much offense as they began the season with a pair of losses on the road. They hope to get going Wednesday, when they face off against the Los Angeles Kings in their home opener. Vancouver dropped a 3-2 decision at Edmonton in their first game of 2019-20 before being blanked in Calgary 3-0 on Saturday. Tanner Pearson and defenseman Alex Edler produced the only goals for the Canucks, who are beginning a three-game homestand.

Los Angeles will be wrapping up a season-opening three-game road trip that has included Saturday’s one-goal loss in Edmonton and an overtime victory at Calgary on Tuesday. The Kings squandered a three-goal lead against the Flames before defenseman Drew Doughty capped a three-point performance with a power-play tally 50 seconds into the extra session.

Doughty and Ilya Kovalchuk each recorded a goal and two assists against Calgary to pull even for the team lead in points with captain Anze Kopitar, who helped set up the overtime tally to raise his total to four. Jeff Carter, who has scored only 13 goals in each of the last two seasons after netting at least 21 in 11 of his first 12 NHL campaigns, has yet to record a point in 2019-20 but has won 73.1 percent of his 26 faceoffs. Blake Lizotte notched an assist on defenseman Sean Walker’s goal Tuesday for his first point in three NHL contests.

A pair of players hope to hit offensive milestones before the end of the homestand, which includes matchups against Philadelphia and Detroit. Bo Horvat is two goals away from 100 for his career while defenseman Chris Tanev needs two points to reach the century mark. Edler, who is the franchise leader among defensemen in goals (95), assists (274) and points, needs three power-play tallies to match Sami Salo (48) for first place.

The Canucks acquired LW David Pope, who has yet to make his NHL debut, from the Red Wings for D Alex Biega.

Los Angeles is 2-for-7 on the power play this season, with Doughty recording both goals.

Vancouver is expected to reveal the identity of the 14th captain in franchise history during a pregame ceremony.
