The Toronto Maple Leafs won’t have one of their most productive players when they attempt to extend a point streak to six games Sunday night against the host Chicago Blackhawks. Right wing Mitch Marner, who signed a six-year, $65.3 extension before the season and has 18 points in 18 games, suffered an ankle injury during the second period of Saturday’s 3-2 shootout loss to Philadelphia and did not make the trip to the Windy City.”It’s hockey, injuries happen and you find out more about other guys,” Toronto coach Mike Babcock told reporters after the contest. “I don’t know the extent of this. I don’t know if it’s a few days or weeks or whatever. There’s no sense dwelling on it. Someone else gets an opportunity. Let’s go.” The Maple Leafs are 3-0-2 in their last five games after rallying from two goals down to gain the point Saturday and hope to knock off the Blackhawks for the fourth time in five meetings.

Chicago gave up the tying goal midway through the third period and lost 3-2 in a shootout at Pittsburgh on Saturday and has lost six times in their eight one-goal games, a statistic that must change if it is to fight for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. “We went through a stretch like that earlier in the year where we played well and didn’t get the win and that wears on you,” Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton told the Chicago Tribune. “We want to finish a few of these games out.”

Center Auston Matthews set up both goals Saturday to extend his team-leading point total to 21 and linemate William Nylander scored once and set another for his second multi-point effort in three games. Kasperi Kapanen moved up to Marner’s spot on a line with captain John Tavares, who was blanked Saturday but has three goals in his last five contests. Frederik Andersen made 30 saves Saturday and backup Michael Hutchinson (0-3-1, .885 save percentage) could get his first start since allowing five tallies in a loss to Montreal on Oct. 26.

Right wing Patrick Kane extended his point streak to five games with a goal Saturday and has recorded eight points during the run after being held to one over the previous five contests. Rookie left wing Dominik Kubalik scored the other goal for Chicago and veteran left wing Brandon Saad had an assist after scoring in each of the previous two contests. Corey Crawford (2-4-2) turned aside 29 shots to earn the point Saturday and Robin Lehner (3-3-2, .935 SP) is likely to get the call Sunday after stopping 106-of-109 shots against the Maple Leafs last season.

Chicago D Duncan Keith has four points in his last five games and needs one goal to reach 100 for his career.

Toronto D Travis Dermott recorded his first goal Saturday and boasts a plus-7 rating in his first five games of the season.

The Blackhawks reside near the bottom of the league with 2.5 goals per game and are allowing the second-most shots per contest (35.5).
