The Calgary Flames are riding a six-game winning streak, a stretch in which they’ve scored 25 goals. But as the red-hot Flames prepare to host the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night, the key to their success has been defense, with goaltender Jacob Markstrom the backbone. Markstrom, who was named the NHL’s first star of the week on Monday, is on a shutout streak of 134 minutes and 35 seconds. He has stopped 126 of 127 shots in his last four games, with three shutouts. He is the first goalie in franchise history to record three shutouts in the first eight games of the season and the first to post three shutouts in four starts.

The Flames, whose longest win streak last season was three games, have surrendered only seven goals during their run this season. If that’s not enough, Calgary hasn’t trailed in a game since its season-opening loss, a big change for a group that was known for its slow starts last season.

The Predators arrive on a run of their own, a three-game winning streak extended by Saturday’s come-from-behind, 3-2 shootout victory over the New York Islanders. “That’s the type of team we want to be,” said rookie forward Tanner Jeannot, who scored twice in the win. “We want to be a team that never gives up. We always (want to be) the hardest-working team out there, so I think that’s just the mindset that we have … to be hard to play against and never give up.”

The Predators started the season with four losses in five games, so a turnaround was necessary to prevent the hole from becoming too big. However, the onus will be to build on it during a six-game road swing.
