• Villarreal played only their second ever major final on Wednesday and put in a brilliant performance to take Chelsea to penalties, only to eventually miss out on the UEFA Super Cup on spot-kicks. Extra-time is hardly the best way to prepare for a new season, but on the flipside, Europa League winners Villarreal have had plenty of chance to get back into rhythm following a turbulent pre-season filled with injuries and positive COVID tests.

• Granada, meanwhile, are coming off the back of an impressive campaign of their own, reaching a record quarter-final in the Europa League last season, as well as securing a ninth-place finish. Unfortunately for Granada, however, they lost much-loved manager Diego Martinez over the course of the summer, with Robert Moreno coming in as his replacement. It will be very interesting to see how the Andalusian club manage that change of coaches and whether it stubs their momentum.
