• Portugal weren’t expecting to be here, only getting in to this tournament following FIFA’s decision to ban Russia – against whom they lost their qualification play-off – due to the war in Ukraine. That means they get a chance to better their 2017 debut effort in which they failed to negotiate the group stage, and they enter in good form as they’re unbeaten in four games (W3, D1) including a creditable 1-1 draw with Australia last time out.

• It would be no surprise if that run continued as Switzerland are yet to win in 2022 (D2, L4) and haven’t scored a first-half goal since November 2021! They qualified via a penalty shootout after drawing their two-legged play-off against the Czech Republic and as none of their Euro 2017 games were decided by a more than a one-goal margin (W1, D1, L1), a cagey opener could be on the cards.

• Players to watch: Maritimo forward Telma Encarnação has scored in two of her last four appearances for Portugal, while each of Switzerland midfielder Coumba Sow’s last five international goals arrived before half-time.
