Women’s World Cup 2019: England v. Japan

What will be the match result?

England: Win

Japan: Win or Draw

Current odds:

England: Win: (+110)

Japan: Win or Draw: (-134)

Japan’s 2-1 win over Scotland means that ‘Nadeshiko’ have now won their last five World Cup (WC) matches against European nations, after failing to win any of their previous ten (W5, D2, L8). Asako Takakura possesses just a 47.5% win-rate (W19, D8, L13) since her arrival as coach in May 2016. Despite being WC winners in 2011 and finalists in 2015, Japan have a poor record in their third group game, winning just one of seven (W1, L6). That sole win (vs Ecuador in 2015) was against a nation FIFA ranked 45 places below them at the time of play.

England’s 1-0 victory over Argentina ensured Phil Neville’s side collected back-to-back group games wins for the first time in a WC campaign. It also marked their first competitive clean sheet since they beat Japan 3-0 in the She Believes Cup (SBC) Final, when all three goals arrived by the 30th minute. Since Neville’s January 2018 arrival, the ‘Lionesses’ have lost only four fixtures (W14, D4, L4) – including three friendlies and once to FIFA ranked #1 USA at the SBC. England failed to score in each loss, but notably they’ve netted two or more goals in 14 of their 22 matches since Neville’s presence.

Each of the three previous WC H2Hs have seen the final goal hit the net after the 61st minute, with two meetings seeing the final goal arrive in the 90th+ minute
