ATP Madrid Open: #5 Zverev v. #3 Thiem

Who will WIN this matchup?

#5 Alexander Zverev (GER)

#3 Dominic Thiem (AUT)

Current odds:

Alexander Zverev: (-150)

Dominic Thiem: (+120)

The German #1 Alexander Zverev upset the home-crowd favorite and five-time former champion Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the quarterfinal on Friday to collect his third straight-set win of the campaign, 6-4 6-4.

Dominic Thiem needed a three-set comeback effort against the big-serving John Isner in his quarterfinal match. The American had fired 89 aces in his previous three matches of the campaign and hit 18 aces in the quarterfinal on Friday but the Austrian still managed to create four breakpoint chances and converted two of them, 3-6 6-3 6-4.

While Dominic Thiem has been performing well below his best level since lifting his maiden slam title in the US Open last year and recently suffered a knee injury, Alexander Zverev seems to be struggling for consistency so far in 2021, which makes it difficult to pick a winner in this semifinal battle between two evenly matched players. That said, Dominic Thiem has dominated this matchup in the past (8-2) and he is also the better player on clay (comparatively) and will head into this clash as the slight favorite.
