• Petra Kvitova’s start to the season has been a horror show. It’s not only a matter of her 2-4 performance but the case of some shocking defeats to wildcard Priscilla Hon in Adelaide (one of her three losses to outside top 200 players in 13 years) and Irina-Camelia Begu in St. Petersburg.

• Camila Giorgi is also coming off the indoor tournament in St. Petersburg where she lost to local player Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets. She has now suffered opening-round losses in five of her seven tournaments since winning her biggest career title in Montreal in a surprise in August.

• Head-to-head: Camila Giorgi leads 2-1. All matches were settled in straight sets, with the Italian winning in the last two. Most recently, she was able to prevail 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of Montreal last summer and went on to claim the title after defeating a total of three top 20 players.
