• Having previously lost its second round in 2018 and quarterfinal in 2019, Barty has now reached the final of Madrid with the loss of a couple of sets across five rounds, to Zidansek and three-time champion Kvitova. She also defeated fellow French Open champion Iga Swiatek, 7-5, 6-4.

• Aryna Sabalenka set-up the Stuttgart final rematch after ending the resurgent campaign of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who was seeking her biggest career final. She struck 23 winners to 11 unforced errors, while the Russian made eight of each, to prevail 6-2, 6-3 in little over an hour.

• All of Sabalenka’s three wins in the singles head-to-head have come in China, with her 2019 Wuhan victory being her only one over a world no. 1 player. Guaranteed a top 5 debut, the Belarusian will be yearning to improve on her compatriot Azarenka’s 2012-13 runner-up finishes in Madrid.
