One week after suffering its first defeat, Wake Forest has a chance to rebound Saturday against one of the worst defenses in the country when it plays visiting Syracuse in an ACC game. The Demon Deacons couldn’t climb out of an early 17-0 hole against North Carolina State but that shouldn’t be a problem against the Orange, who have allowed 181 points over their last four games.

When Dungey drops back to throw, more often than not he is looking for Amba Etta-Tawo or Ervin Philips, who have combined for 89 of Dungey’s 148 completions. Etta-Tawo, a graduate transfer from Maryland, is the deep threat (840 yards, 17.9 per catch), while Philips plays more underneath (8.5). Steve Ishmael (22), Brisly Estime (18) and Dontae Strickland (12) also put up double-digit reception numbers in the first season for coach Dino Babers.

The Demon Deacons could be buoyed by the return of Carney, who missed the last three games with a sprained knee ligament. The freshman, who opened the season as the starting running back and ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns, practiced Tuesday, but Clawson would not confirm his status for Saturday’s game. In his absence, the sophomore Colburn has churned out 337 yards on the ground while catching eight passes for 83 yards, and Wolford has added another 182 yards to the run game.

The Orange have won four straight against Wake Forest and have outscored the Demon Deacons 73-24 in three ACC matchups.

The matchup of Etta-Tawo against Wake Forest senior corner Brad Watson is one to watch.

Syracuse ranks in the bottom 10 in the country in yards allowed (2,521) and yards per game (504), while Wake Forest is 96th among the 128 FBS teams with 1,327 passing yards allowed.
