Sun @ Fever

Who will WIN this matchup?

Connecticut Sun (11-5)

@ Indiana Fever (1-15)

Current odds:

Connecticut Sun: (-2000)

Indiana Fever: (+1000)

• The line for this game is Sun by 15 points.

• You’d think that someone might take pity on the Indiana Fever, who take an 11-game losing streak and WNBA-worst 1-15 record into their Thursday night home game with the Connecticut Sun.

• Not so, said veteran forward Jantel Lavender. “We’re a team now not to lose to,” she said to the Indianapolis Star on June 24 after an 89-64 home loss to Dallas. “So we have to know that we’re going to get their best game and people are going to make sure they’re not the team to come out and lose to us, so we have to have that sense of urgency to understand that and I don’t think we have that yet.”

• Indiana went winless in June, largely because of its inability to get stops. The Fever have allowed at least 80 points in all but three games, mainly due to poor first-shot defense. They are permitting opponents to hit 46.5 percent from the field and a whopping 40.3 percent of their 3-pointers.

• In its defeat to Dallas, Indiana wasted a 24-point outing by Kelsey Mitchell by working from the same script it’s used most of the year. It played weak defense, compounded it with 19 turnovers and then shot only 35.4 percent from the field.

• Meanwhile, Connecticut comes into town fresh off a dominant effort Tuesday night in a 90-71 win at Washington. The Sun (11-5) got 23 points and 16 rebounds from Jonquel Jones, who led five players in double figures.

• Connecticut won its third straight game by sinking 50 percent of its field-goal tries, including a 12-of-24 performance from the 3-point line, and owning the boards in a way few teams ever have. It quadrupled the Mystics 52-13, with Jones outboarding them by herself.

• This is the first of a two-game series between the teams; they wrap it up on Saturday. The Sun won the first meeting 88-67 on May 19.
